New pipeline ‘could power Sydney, Melbourne’

An $800 million, 622km gas pipeline connecting Northern Territory gas to the eastern seaboard could eventually transport enough energy to meet the daily power needs of Sydney and Melbourne.

Speaking at the official sod-turning for the project that will run from Tennant Creek to Mt Isa in Queensland, Jemena managing director Paul Adams said the pipe will move 100 terrajoules a day but can be upgraded to 700 terrajoules a day, the same energy use of Sydney or Melbourne.
